Inexpensive Methods Of Building Your Own Home Garden

August 8th, 2009 . by Learn For Free

Gardens are expensive. At least, they are initially when you are buying all of the supplies needed to build it, maintain it, and harvest the fruits of your labor. Don’t frown just yet, you can still have your cake and eat it to. Cutting costs in building a garden is easy so long as you know your way around the gardening world.

The first step is to design your garden. If you are completely new to the world of gardening, be prepared to take in a lot of information at once! You can get free books and audio discs regarding the subject at your library if you have a pass. Otherwise you can use the Internet to find free websites or magazines that will give you the help you need during the planning stage.

Going to a nursery is expensive- it’s probably the last place you want to look. That is, unless you have knowledge of how to buy plants and flowers off season. The only real problem here is that when buying like this, the plants or flowers will not bloom until the next growing period. Since they are in less demand, the price associated with them will drop.

Always be on the lookout for a shop that is on the side of the road. While rare, finding one can give you the least expensive plants for your money. Private sellers are always friendly as well, and will allow for bartering if you don’t have the money for their prices. Treat the seller with respect and generosity, and they will surely return it.

Don’t be afraid to make friends with other gardeners- you will find they are the most generous of the bunch. Gardeners will actively engage in garden swapping, or a term used to describe the process of trading seeds, bulbs, and other materials to grow a new type of plant in your garden. The trade will, of course, demand that you have something to give in return.

If you are in true financial need, check with the free organizations in your area. There are green initiatives that will come and plant gardens for the needy. Others may even go further, providing you with food to help you in the hard times. That way you have food for now, and can work for a great garden in the future with some hard work and luck.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need a lot of money to start a garden for need or pleasure. You only need to be creative in how you make the garden, maintain it, and how you interact with other gardeners. With a smile and a good attitude, there is nothing you can’t accomplish.
